How Much Does a Website Cost in Canada?

When a small business in British Columbia decides to get a website, the first question is usually: how much will it cost? There is no single number. The price comes from a handful of concrete choices about scope. This guide explains what drives the cost, compares the common ways to build a site, and lists the questions to ask so the quote you get is a fixed one.

What drives the cost

Number of pages

Every page means more design, layout and content work. A five-page site (home, about, services, contact and a blog) takes far less time than a site with dozens of product or service pages, each with its own copy and images.

Copywriting (included in our price)

Copywriting is included in our build price. If your copy is ready, we place it and make sure it reads well on screen; if not, we do the research, writing, editing and wording that helps search.

Design

A clean, mobile-first design that follows your brand is the baseline. Custom graphics, animation or an unusual layout add design time and usually more rounds of changes.

Connections to other systems

Linking the site to a CRM, a booking system, an online shop or an email tool means extra set-up and testing, and each one has its own requirements.

Hosting and care

Hosting is usually a recurring cost, often bundled with a care plan for updates, security patches, backups and monitoring. With Virtuoso the first year of hosting is included in the build price, and a monthly care plan follows after that.

SEO foundations

Clean web addresses, fast loading, a proper heading structure, structured data and a good mobile layout help a site rank in local search. They cost less when they are built in from the start rather than added later.

Updates over time

A website keeps changing: new pages, new content, sometimes a refresh. Agreeing how updates are handled up front prevents surprise bills later.

DIY builder, template or custom build

ApproachWhat you getYour effortWhen it makes sense
DIY website builder (such as Wix or Squarespace)Ready-made templates, a drag-and-drop editor and hosting in oneYou build and maintain the site yourselfYou need a quick, low-cost presence and are happy managing it on your own
WordPress with a templateA professional theme on WordPress, with plugins as neededYou or a provider adapt the theme; some technical knowledge helpsYou want more flexibility than a builder without a fully unique design
Custom buildA design made for you, with the features and connections you needA full project from discovery to launch, with a providerYou need a distinct brand, specific features, or full control of the site

All three can produce a working site. Builders are fastest but limit your branding and growth. A template is a middle ground with more control. A custom build gives you the most freedom, but it needs clear requirements and a collaborative design process.

Questions to ask for a fixed quote

  1. How many pages will the site need?
  2. Do you already have the copy and images, or do they need to be created?
  3. Which connections are needed: CRM, booking, online shop or others?
  4. Is hosting, backup and security monitoring included?
  5. Is any custom development needed beyond a standard theme?
  6. When does the site need to launch?
  7. Does your industry have accessibility or privacy requirements?

With clear answers to these, a provider can give you a precise fixed price.

Red flags in a quote

  • An hourly rate, or “additional work billed separately”, without a clear scope.
  • Vague deliverables such as “custom design” without saying how many rounds of changes are included.
  • Hosting, backups or security left out of the price and charged later.
  • No support after launch, or a very short support window.

If you see any of these, ask for a revised quote that says exactly what is included.

How Virtuoso quotes

  1. Discovery and scoping. We meet in person or online to understand your business, your customers and what the site has to do. Together we map out the pages, content, design direction and any connections.
  2. Fixed quote. You get one price covering design, build, copywriting, testing, launch, staff training and the first year of hosting. Changes within the agreed scope are included until you approve the launch. You see the number, and the scope it covers, before any work starts.

Our sites are built on WordPress and owned by you, so your staff can edit content after launch. The first year of hosting is included, and a monthly care plan follows if you would rather not manage the site yourself. See our website design services for what a build includes.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a small-business website take?

A typical small-business website takes 1 to 2 weeks to build. The biggest factor is how quickly content and feedback come back. You also get a timeline with the fixed quote.

Do I need a separate domain and hosting?

The domain name is bought from a registrar. Hosting is included in our build price for the first year, then a monthly care plan follows, or you can choose another provider. We recommend managed WordPress hosting for speed and security.

Will the website work on phones?

Yes. We design for the phone first, because that is where most visitors decide whether to get in touch.

Can I update the website myself?

Yes. We build it so your own staff can make everyday edits, and we train them as part of the launch.

Where does SEO fit into the price?

The technical SEO foundations are included in every build. Ongoing work such as keyword research and local SEO is a separate service you can add later.
